Board FAQ

U51 Graphic Awards System
It is with great pleasure that we launch the Urban 51 Sig Awards. I know a number of members have requested the awards and we have had them made for almost a year.
The reason they weren't launched earlier, is because we wanted to promote a healthy sig environment, without the pressure of competition.
I think we've achieved that, and I think we're ready to step it up to the next level.

The sig awards were designed not only to reward those who make great graphics, but additionally, those who help others.
The only way we can all progress, is to help and nurture each other into the best artists possible.
Adding the "Tutorial" element to the awards ensures that those who are progressing, help others to achieve their graphic goals, while persuing their own.

So here are the sig awards. Read each level carefully.

Intern:

This is a newbie to sigmaking. They are active in the sig forum and have participated in 3 10 day challenges.
They have the VERY basics of sigmaking down. This award rewards participation and serves as an encouragement to move to the next level.

Number of Pieces Required: 15
Types of Pieces: sigs, banners, 3d renders, and inks. Must include at least 1 larger scaled graphics.
Tutorials Required: no tutorials required.
Percentage Required to Achieve Award: 75%

Associate of Arts:

This sigmaker has progressed from an Intern and possesses all the basic skills and fundamentals of creating graphics.
They show some signs of originality and some variety in their sigs.

Number of Pieces Required: 30
Types of Pieces: sigs, banners, 3d renders, and inks. Must include at least 5 larger scaled graphics.
Tutorials Required: 2 tutorials.

Bachelor of Arts:

This sigmaker has achieved their Associate of Arts, and with it, they no longer make rookie technical mistakes.
They demonstrate an accelerated set of skills in their work, and show the ability to create original concepts.

Number of Pieces Required: 60
Types of Pieces: sigs, banners, 3d renders, and inks. Must include at least 15 larger scaled graphics.
Tutorials Required: 5 tutorials.
Percentage Required to Achieve Award: 82%

Master of Arts:

The Master makes graphics that are ALL fundamentally sound, and creative. They show innovation and diversity in their works.
There is very little to fault a Master. They show a grasp of more than one medium/application to create works. The Master is also a leader, in that they have helped many a sigmaker with advice, critiques and tutorials.

Number of Pieces Required: 120
Types of Pieces: sigs, banners, 3d renders, and inks. Must include at least 35 larger scaled graphics.
Tutorials Required: 10 tutorials.
Percentage Required to Achieve Award: 86%

PhD of Arts:

There is nothing a PhD of Arts can't create. They excel in creating works from scratch.
They display skill on an expert level and show proficiency in at least 3 applications. They display a broad range of works, and show that they can step out of their comfort zone and still create works of art.
The PhD sets the bar for creativity, uniqueness and innovation.

Number of Pieces Required: 300
Types of Pieces: sigs, banners, 3d renders, and inks. Must include at least 60 larger scaled graphics.
Tutorials Required: 25 tutorials.
Percentage Required to Achieve Award: 90%

The Breakdown:

Number of Pieces Required: This is the number of individual sigs, etc necessary to be considered for the award. You may include more when going for the Masters or PhD level.

Types of Pieces: This refers to the types of acceptable images that can be considered when going for these awards. If you are unsure of a graphic, please ask before submitting your application. A larger sized graphic is defined, for the purposes of these awards, as any graphic over 1400 total pixels.

Tutorials Required: This is the minimum number of tutorials that must have been posted on the board, in order to be considered for the award. See below for more information on the Tutorial component of these awards.

Percentage Required to Achieve Award: This is the percentage needed to be given the award. In the case of the Bachelors, Masters and the Phd of Arts, only sigmakers holding a Associate of Arts or higher award will be permitted to vote.

The Tutorial Component This element was added to the awards to encourage the sharing of ideas and to help develop budding graphic designers and sigmakers. Tutorials can be submitted by anyone. A tutorial is defined as a useful tool to help show/teach someone how to do something. Since we are talking about sigs and graphics, it should be obvious that these tutorials must be graphic related. They can cover a basic technique or an advanced one, and may cover any graphic program used to make sigs, and graphics. In order for an artist to include a tutorial in their application, the tutorial must already have been voted as a useful tut, and appears in the Tutorial forum *to be added*. This must be done prior to the applicant applying for their award. These tutorials should include detailed instructions as well as screenshots when necessary. They must be ORIGINAL tutorials. This means that they must be your own wording and screenshots. Any tutorials submitted that are found to be someone else's will be deemed useless, and not permitted for submission with application. Also note, that tutorials can only be duplicated if the method is different. For example, if someone does a tutorial showing how to cut an image using the lasso tool, the only way another tutorial on cutting an image would be accepted, is to show another way to cut, ie. masking, magic eraser, etc. Submitting Applications: Sig awards must be done in order. You can not apply for an Associate award without having received your Intern award. This is to help ensure that there is a progression, and to give the sigmaker time to grow. Once you have decided to apply for your award, you must contact the Admin of the board. You are required to provide a link for your application. Admin will check to ensure the minimum requirements are met, and will inform you of the date in which your application will be posted. Please make sure that your links are accurate and working as it will not be the Admin's responsibility to ensure your graphics show. A public poll will be made in the Urban Legends forum with your application. The poll will be open for 48 hours. Once the poll is closed, an announcement will be made as to the status of the application. Whether you achieve your award or not, a new application for the next level, or a reapplication for the current level will only be accepted after 30 days has elapsed from the initial results of your application. Your Application Your application must include only sigs you've created yourself. These are sigs that are 100% yours. If you didn't draw it, or render it personally, you may not use it. This of course doesn't apply to stock images and images such as women and people. This does apply to other people's artwork, 3d renders, drawings, and digital art. Should a sigmaker be questioned about his images, he should be able to provide a PSD for the graphic in question, should it be requested. Anyone caught using "ripped" components in their sigs/graphics, will not be permitted to submit another application for 60 days. When Voting: Because the awards are based on public polls, it is necessary to point out a few things. First of all, only voters who have commented on the application will have their votes counted. Simply pressing Yes or No will not count. When voting, and replying, you MUST stipulate the reason for your vote. It doesn't have to be long and drawn out, but you must indicate why you voted the way you did. This is especially important if you are denying the applicant and voting No. The only way for a sigmaker to grow, is to understand why they were denied the award in the first place. Comments will help the sigmaker realize what they need to work on going forward, whether they receive the award or not. Voting on applications isn't a matter of color or your favorite sig chick. Although we can't tell people HOW to vote, we can suggest that you consider the following when placing your vote. Are the images in good quality (images, stocks)? Are the cuts on point? Are the designs crisp and clear? (no jagged lines, or distorted images) Did the artist have a good grasp of color, font choice, and other graphic elements? Did the artist vary their layouts and compositions? Did the artist show a level of originality and uniqueness? As stated above, in the case of the Bachelors, Masters and the Phd of Arts, only sigmakers holding a Associate of Arts or higher award will be permitted to vote. The reason for this is to ensure that those skilled in PS The Appeal Process If you feel that you have been wronged, or unfairly voted against, you may appeal to Admin to have your application reviewed. You must have solid evidence to your claim. Your case will be reviewed, and Admin's decision is final. If you are awarded a successful appeal, your application will be resubmitted. Other General Notes of Interest Only one application will run at the same time. This is to ensure that all attention is focused on the individual and their application. This is an evolving system and may be updated as situations arise. Any rule changes will be posted. FAQ's 1. Can I use the same images from one application to another? You don't have to use all new sigs when moving from level to level, but keep in mind, the awards are not based on progression of skill, but rather skill itself. You stand to lose possible votes by including older and less skilled works, in your applications. Showing your Mastery of an award, doesn't mean you have to show how you got there. 2. Why have you excluded non sigmakers from the voting process? Non sigmakers have not be entirely removed from the voting process. They are permitted to vote for the Intern and Associate awards, however, for the other 3 awards, we felt it would be fairer to leave the voting to those who are awarded sigmakers, who we feel are better able to understand the application process, since they have been through it, and because they are better able to judge sigs/graphics because they make them as well. 3. What is considered a useful tutorial? A useful tutorial will be something the board has voted on as being useful, and has been posted in the Tutorial Forum. Each tutorial posted will be voted on to determine it's usefulness. If the board votes the tutorial is complete and helpful, it will be eligible to be used in the poster's application. If the tutorial is not useful, it will be removed. Any questions, please feel free to ask....Applications can be submitted anytime after January 30th or when minimum requirements have been met.

I want to extend a very warm thank you to Miss Soulsys who helped me originally with the idea of adding the tutorial element to the awards. And of course, thank you to my mods who also shaped the final version of these awards, especially Xray, who designed them.

my rant....

And I'd really like to extend a big FU to those who lurked on this board, and thought stealing the awards would be cool. You may not have stolen the images, but stealing names and concepts shows your lack of creativity. But I guess that's what happens when you have no originality or ideas of your own. You lurk on other places and steal their ideas. But stealing from here, only makes me and the other people that work hard on this board, just rise above the bullshit. Just makes me more motivated to do bigger and better. Urban 51 will always be an innovator and leader, never a follower.
